SUPRANATIONAL DEMOCRACY DIALOGUE

A dialogue among scholars, civil society, and creative thinkers about global democratic solutions to global challenges

VI Edition, Brindisi (Italy), May 2-3 2024

SHARED VALUES AND GLOBAL GOVERNANCE FOR PEACE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

The University of Salento will host at Palazzo Nervegna, Brindisi, Italy, on 2-3 May 2024, a new edition of this unique event aimed at gathering scholars from different backgrounds, international officials, representatives of civil society as well as innovative thinkers in order to discuss the most significant challenges that humanity is currently facing.

In this dark time, the international community is in fact increasingly concerned about war and the way it is shaking the very roots of civil coexistence, challenging the very foundations of international law. Against this backdrop, building peace and mutual understanding among peoples, while working on the adoption of shared choices embracing common interests, remains the only possible option for those who believe that a different world is possible.

Nowadays, the most debated issues, such as climate change, oceans plastic pollution, loss of biodiversity, migration, wars, famines, and the threat to democracy stemming from the distorted and manipulative use of communication on the Internet, do certainly have a global dimension. They are all well beyond the reach of national states and sometimes the European Union itself, which nevertheless represents the most advanced phenomenon of democracy in the supranational sphere.

Global institutions, created many decades ago for a world of sovereign nations, are not perfect. The globalization of finance, markets and social media, as well as the issues posed by climate change and pandemics require the adoption of a perspective capable of embracing a different perspective both for rights and governance.

The Supranational Democracy Dialogue event, kicked off in 2018 (with previous editions’ recordings available on YouTube) have become a point of reference for a network of scholars and civil society organizations willing to discuss together solutions instead of problems. The event is the only one in the world aimed at stablishing a dialogue on democracy and global governance challenges, and, more generally, participation as well as active citizenship in the international sphere beyond borders. The 2024 edition will be devoted to matters related to the process of building peaceful coexistence of values, with a session focused on the promotion of those supported by the EU and a global one on governance and democracy. In the afternoon, a more practical approach will be adopted. Four thematic working groups will discuss the most controversial aspects concerning: (i) Democracy and technology; (ii) Climate and environmental emergencies; (iii) War and peace building; and (iv) The approach of the European elections, respectively. For each group, facilitators/experts will lead a brainstorming session aimed at involving all participants in the debate so that scholars, activists, and international officials will be able to interact among each other and the public in order to broaden the perspective of the current debate and encouraging the proliferation of new ideas outside the box.

Since the event’s main source of inspiration is the United Nations 2030 agenda, it is worth highlighting that sustainable development goals are all intertwined. In particular, Goal 17 (“Partnership for the goals”) is key to unlocking the potential of each of them. Democracy and good governance are necessary tools to achieve them all.

What makes the event particularly interesting is also the network of entities supporting it - such as the UNGSC, the UNHRD, the Democracy without Borders bases, the Robert Triffin International Foundation, the Atlas movement, the CesUE study center, the Euractiv.it newspaper, the Democracy School, the Groups on International Law of International Organizations (SIDI DIEcon) and Human Rights (DIEDU) of the Italian Society of International Law and the European Union (SIDI), and the Forum on the International Projection of the European Union (PIUE) of the Italian Association of European Union Law Scholars (AISDUE).

Among partners, we are particularly grateful to the Maison Jean Monnet - European Parliament Training Center in Paris, to the Democracy and Culture Foundation, which every year organizes the Democracy Forum in Athens (in partnership with the New York Times, where innovative democracy is discussed at the transnational and supranational levels), and to the scientific magazine Athena (“Critical Inquiries in Law, Philosophy and Globalization”), which publishes the best contributions on the matters that will be discussed during the event.

While hoping that the event in Brindisi organized by the University of Salento will become increasingly well-known for developing activities complementary to those of the Athens Democracy Forum, its very existence confirms the strong will to create an international hub where ideas related to peace and international cooperation themes can proliferate and pave the way for innovative and mutually agreed solutions.
